In the (very smelly) Battery East hiker tunnel, we found a big touch wall, covered with felt. Different places on the wall had braille writing, which told us to go to a cafe somewhere. At that cafe, we got a mad lib-type booklet, which when solved, told us to go to the 22nd street CalTrain station.

At the train station, we found the clue quickly enough - a series of band-aids taped to a wall in different positions, with different colors and smells. We couldn't stay for a long look, though... we had to high-tail it back to the van to avoid the cops (who were apparently quite concerned about the large numbers of people showing up in vans and skulking about the train station).
Once safely back in the van, we settled down to solve the puzzle (after a small break "helping" one of the other teams by blasting the profanities CD over their walkabout frequency). Eventually, we figured out that each unique position/smell combination represented a letter. By using "Go to" as a crib for the beginning of the message, we managed to decipher the rest of the clue, which sent us to the Bay Bridge Inn in San Francisco. |
At the hotel, we found one of the Fobik "scientists", beat-up and band-aided. She pointed us at the next clue: pictures of her murdered colleagues. Each polaroid had a set of bloody fingerprints on the edge; these fingerprints represented binary numbers. When converted to letters, the numbers read:
